Recreational kayaking is exploding in popularity, particularly in the Cumberlands. While the Big South Fork and its primary tributaries are known for their whitewater, long stretches of calm water provide ample opportunity for recreational paddlers. New River, which is one of the two primary tributaries of the Big South Fork and is located outside the Big South Fork National River & Recreation Area, is perhaps the most popular destination for recreational paddlers.
Popular put-in spots include ramps at the U.S. Hwy. 27 bridge south of Huntsville, Tenn., and on Old Town Springs Road behind the courthouse square in Huntsville.
Another popular access point is the bridge along Winona Road east of Huntsville.
While Clear Fork does not include enough calm water to make it suitable for recreational paddling, the Big South Fork River has long pools of still water near the Station Camp River Access point and between O&W Bridge and Leatherwood Ford.
Another popular destination for recreational paddlers is Flat Creek Reservoir in Huntsville.
